My Idea
Every once in a while I get an idea and don't always think it through or follow-up on it. Usually a good prank to play on someone or something like that.
And that's where my best friend comes in. My best friend is gullible as the day is long. We used to call him 'EZ' because his high school 8-class schedule was made up of a close-to-remedial math, a remedial English (called 'Library' and consisted of a few lessons on the Dewey-decimal system and
otherwise it was putting books back on the shelves in the, yep, library!), typing, a beginner's computer class, 2 art classes, and a "study break class" (which meant sitting in the library and reading your textbooks for other classes (and he still didn't do his homework). Easy courses, especially when his friends are taking honours courses, advanced computing classes, foreign language classes and such. We were all jealous of his schedule, but knew we'd get nowhere in life (or at least the life we wanted) with that type of education. He's happy working at Foot Locker and God bless him!
But he's really gullible. So gullible in fact, that he didn't clue in the time he bought me a "congratulations on the birth of your child" greeting card for my 21st birthday. It started a trend that died out about 2 years ago where we'd exchange dumb-ass greeting cards for our birthday.
I'm still laughing about the "sorry you lost your arm" card I found that time.
He still has no idea what's good about the Internet (besides all the porn). And that's partially where my idea came from. That, and his uncanny gullibility would also have to thank the Barenaked Ladies' 'Another Postcard':
"You can't imagine so many monkeys in the daily mail
All of them coming anonymously so they leave no trail
I never thought I'd have an admirer from overseas
But someone is sending me stationary filled with chimpanzees."
Ah, postcards. I love 'em. Just after graduating from high school (this is going to turn into 2 posts 'cuz I have another story to tell), I went camping with my friends as our own "celebration of freedom." Turned out to be a fairly big "goodbye" too as most of them I didn't see again until our 10-year reunion. While away, I grabbed a postcard from a local shop and sent it to my prom date from Hell (maybe I have a few stories to share... maybe). On the card, I simply wrote:
"The weather is here --wish you were beautiful."
EZ loved it and did the same. Same message. Sent it to his Mother and she got mad at him. Why? He signed his. That's EZ for ya.
Over a few years, I sent more from various locations. All with the same message. Eventually, 1997 I think --they found out who'd been sending the cards. At least they were impressed with where all I'd been.
As I was reading a number of emails about people travelling to different locations, I thought about how great it would be travel again. It's been a while and I was looking forward to my mini-vacation to my parents' place. It was travelling, but not REAL travelling. 300 kilometres in a car is not
REAL travelling.
And then I thought of EZ....
To be honest, I haven't kept in touch with EZ in the past year. I do feel bad about it, but our schedules tend to clash and we just can't seem to find the time to catch up right now. So, what better time to spring a joke on him,
yes?
3 of 'My Kids' are abroad right now. One's in Mexico. One in Spain. One in China. All 3 are sending postcards to EZ with little messages like, "there's more coming..." "expect more soon..." and, after a phone call from a friend with an unlisted number,
"you've been told to hold onto these..." He asked the caller what this was all about and all he was told was "You're on the Frequency." (I'll explain that later, but he'll never figure it out --at least until the middle of the next TV season on the WB)
I also had a co-worker send one from Ireland. Another friend sent one from --I think-- Belize. Another sent one from New York City.
I'm screwing with his mind.
I'm planning on continuing this until his birthday in... October. Yep, it's only May so this is going to bug him for quite some time. And I'm enjoying every minute of it.
I need help, though. I'm trying to find more people in different countries who can send him postcards with little obscure messages. It's the only way this is going to work.
Eventually, EZ will find out who's been 'sending' these and that's when the real fun begins. See, EZ will get this look on his face, mouth wide open, eyes semi-crossed. He'll suddenly clue in to this half-year prank and know it's his best friend screwing with his mind. At this point, his sister (admittedly, an ex-girlfriend of mine) will ask the inevitable question: "When did he go to all these places?"
And then the REAL FUN begins....
Wanna help? Let me know where you're going!
